Man unknowingly buys medical records

Whether you think it could happen or not, docs and files could very easily fall into the wrong hands. Here's a story about a gentleman who bought the contents of an abandoned storage locker, and was surprised at it's contents. Yet another reason to hire a professional shredding company like A Plus Paper Shredding in Louisville!

Man unknowingly buys medical records

When Athens native Bobby Roberts placed a bid of more than $1,000 for the contents of a delinquent storage unit in Florence, he said he thought he was buying medical equipment and maybe old office files.

But on Sept. 10, when he opened the 20 or so boxes in the unit at Climate Guard Self Storage on Florence Boulevard, he discovered the boxes were filled with personal medical records from Digital Diagnostic Imaging Inc. Some were from as recently as 2009, while others dated to 2002...

Here's an unfortunate story of a doctor who has made it easy for thieves to steal his patient's identity.

Paper Shredding events benefit Louisville and beyond

A Plus Paper Shredding partners with different organizations to put on Free Paper Shredding Events. These events are great fund raisers for non-profits, and a great way to bring the community together. Churches, charities, neighborhood associations...they can all benefit with a document destruction event like this.

Here is a story about a similar event in Pennsylvania!

Community Shred Events Popular Weekend Activity

Some 30 minutes before Arcadia University in Pennsylvania was set to open up its “One Stop Drop” community recycling event, cars were already lined up, each filled with boxes of paper destined for the free shredding service.
“If we tell them it starts at 11 a.m., people are there at 10:30 and waiting,” says Kasey Lynch, student supervisor with the Office of Community Service.
Similar scenes are playing out across the U.S. every weekend as community paper shredding events are offered, providing the public with a way to meet its pent-up demand for securely disposing of documents containing sensitive personal information that could, if in the wrong hands, be used for identity theft or other nefarious purposes..

What can healthcare organizations learn from the multi- million dollar penalties recently issued by the Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights (OCR) for privacy violations?

Recently, the OCR singled out two prominent healthcare organizations—Cignet Health of Maryland with a penalty of $4.3 million dollars and Massachusetts General with a settlement of $1 million—both for allegedly violating the Federal HIPAA Privacy and Security Rule, the rule that protects the privacy of patient healthcare information.

Interesting Facts about Document Destruction

Here are some facts that every business in Louisville needs to know. Enjoy the article, then call us for more info about your document destruction needs.

1.) Every Business Has Information That Requires Destruction.

All businesses have occasion to discard confidential data. Customers lists, price lists, sales statistics, drafts of bids and correspondence, and even memos, contain information about business activity which would interest any competitor. Every business is also entrusted with information that must be kept private. Employees and customers have the legal right to have this data protected.
Without the proper safeguards, information ends up in the dumpster where it is readily, and legally, available to anybody. The trash is considered by business espionage professionals as the single most available source of competitive and private information from the average business. Any establishment that discards private and proprietary data without the benefit of destruction, exposes itself to the risk of criminal and civil prosecution, as well as the costly loss of business.

2.) Stored Records Should Be Destroyed On A Regular Schedule.

The period of time that business records are stored should be determined by a retention schedule that takes into consideration their useful value to the business and the governing legal requirements. No record should be kept longer than this retention period....

The law and document destruction

It's always interesting when we walk into a potential client's office, and see a stack of paperwork lying on the floor in the corner. When we ask about it, the answer, inevitably, is "That pile only stays there for a week, then we throw it out."

Little do they know, 9 times out of 10 they are breaking the law.

The law is very strict when it comes to protecting the privacy of a company's clients and employees. Just one violation could result in thousands of $$$ in fines, as well as their reputation.

HERE is a great article on just one of the laws...HIPPA.
