Here's a story about a gentleman who bought the contents of an abandoned storage locker, and was surprised at it's contents. When Athens native Bobby Roberts placed a bid of more than $1,000 for the contents of a delinquent storage unit in Florence, he said he thought he was buying medical equipment and maybe old office files.
But on Sept. 10, when he opened the 20 or so boxes in the unit at Climate Guard Self Storage on Florence Boulevard, he discovered the boxes were filled with personal medical records from Digital Diagnostic Imaging Inc. Some were from as recently as 2009, while others dated to 2002...

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A Charlotte doctor was forced to pay a hefty fine for dumping his patients' financial and medical information in the summer of 2010.
WBTV first covered the story about Dr. Ervin Batchelor of the Carolina Center for Development and Rehabilitation in mid-June 2010. Now, Dr. Batchelor has paid $40,000 as a fine, according to a statement released by the NC Attorney General's Office.

A former Depew village justice is under arrest in Hawaii in connection with an FBI probe into the illegal disposal of some private medical records.
John E. Cipolla, who resigned from his job as a village justice after he was censured by state officials in 2002, was arrested about three weeks ago in Hawaii, authorities Friday told The Buffalo News.

The Federal Trade Commission today said that provisions of the recently enacted Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act will help reduce identity theft and help victims recover. In testimony to the House Ways and Means Committee’s Subcommittee on Social Security, Howard Beales, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said that many of the provisions will go into effect over the course of this year.
